They each had their own goals and feel to the games, and didn't really step on each others toes. In retrospect, the fact that those big three MMOS (AC, EverQuest, and Ultima Online) were all so different was amazing for the time. I'm thankful the game has managed to live on post-closure. Being able to run across and never have a loading screen was amazing at the time. Our universe, or as it was called in the old tales, the 'Sea of Souls', was a vast ocean of darkness until the goddess Arua created the seven planets. I loved how it was such a wide open world, and I remember being in awe at how far you could see in the game at launch. There are various tales, fantasies, and legends around the seven planets and many of them contain some grain of truth. The ones I am sad about are Asheron's Call 1 and 2, and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.Īsheron's Call was a classic. You can find some really neat stuff if you dig deep enough too, like this MMORPG called Wizardry Online. MEGA understands the importance of keeping data and conversations private. There are MMO's I have never heard of, some I even recognize like Trickster Online, and Exteel, all shutdown at one point. digging for long lost treasure and eventually finding the treasure chest, only to find out the actual treasure is gone or missing. Whatever the reason is, going down a list of shutdown games is both amazing and saddening at the same time. There are many reasons why an MMO doesn't last, it either doesn't get enough attention from bad marketing, the game isn't good, money issues, or people just move on. Of course, you can't really expect MMORPG's to survive for such long lengths of time unless you're one of the well known few. Not to mention people were moving on up from dial up connections like AOL and EarthLink, to more stable connections like DSL/Cable. You had publishers like Webzen, Ijji, Gpotato, Subagames, Gamersfirst, Jagex, Aeria Games and many more. These were some crazy times because it felt like a new MMO was coming out left and right, especially ones from South Korea. MMORPG's blew up in popularity in the mid 1990's to the late 2000's.
